Up in the Club
Last week we had our windows washed, for the first time in 4 years! I told the kids they were not allowed to touch any glass windows or doors. I warned, "Only touch the handle." That is how to properly open a door right?!? Why, oh why is that so hard!? To make my orders even more impossible, the Ice Storm of the century hit the next day. Frozen raindrops and sheets of ice stuck to our fresh windows. It was beautiful and sad at the same time. Then came the final straw, Ice Storm 2018, kept my kids home for 8 out of 9 days straight. They have only gone to school for 9 of the 26 days of this month. We may as well just launch ourselves into Summer Break here Kansas!! What is happening! Ugh! I desperately wanted them to look cleaner for longer than a day and for my kids to be at school to help my cause :)
Anyway, the gentleman washing the windows was friendly. His name was Adriel and he had been doing windows for 20 years. I was painting in the den when he came in to do the windows in there. We got to talking. I learned he was born and raised here in Kansas City. He asked me where I was from. I said, I have lived in several places, but most recently we moved from Los Angeles. We got to talking about the differences and the pros and cons of each city. Then he asked me, genuinely asked me, where in KC did I like to go "clubbin'." I was caught of guard a little. Did he just say clubbin'? To me? Not missing a beat, I answered honestly, "I don't go clubbin' really. With all the kids and all, not to much time for the Mister and I to hit the nightlife." I thought to myself, "Adriel, what part of this (motioning to this whole magical 41 year old body and self), looks like it goes clubbing?"
I know this will come as a shock, but this is not the first time, since living here, I have been asked this question. Rewind to our first year here at MNU. I was getting my camera ready before one of the games and one of Brian's players, who had just transferred to MNU, was talking with me. I learned he had just moved from Las Vegas. I told him I had been there a few times when we lived out west. Without pause he asked, "Ah right now, what clubs did you used to hit up?" Again, what? Me? I didn't think I really looked like one who goes "clubbing." I have a husband, 5 kids, and no free Friday nights to hit up the clubs. I actually walked away with the hugest smile, because I loved that he was 100% being himself, making great conversation, and he was right where God wanted him...at a school where the coach and his wife play UNO and fall asleep to Netflix on Friday nights. No clubbing for us 👯, but I will take your question, young man, as a compliment 😉.
